VThree RECAP – Armadale Project

I’d like to start a series, showcasing previous projects VThree have completed and to talk through the details and process of each one, as there can be different briefs, aims and problems along the way.

A project that stands out as a good place to start is my Armadale project, recently entered into the Architeam Awards 2016.

The project brief was to renovate and extend the existing Edwardian home in Armadale to meet the needs of a growing family and make better use of the large unused site to the rear of the property.

It became a 2 stage project, the first a fit out of an existing loft space into a master bedroom and ensuite with new stairwell and ground floor bathroom. This was quite a challenging project with low angled ceilings, narrow spaces and existing roof structures to contend with.

The second stage, the construction of a new single storey extension at the rear of the property, included an open plan kitchen, living and dining space with a large walk in pantry with external access, a separate laundry, powder room and a study/playroom. This was a fairly simple design, however the connection between the old and new proved to be a challenge.

As you can see above, we brightened up the hallway and removed the doors at the rear to create a long and open corridor that flowed down towards the new extension. This immediately made the corridor feel bigger and more modern while maintaining and celebrating the period features.

We included large steel frame windows and polished concrete floors in the new extension. This gave it a contemporary feel and made the very most of the garden view from the kitchen/living and dining area.

We are very proud of this project and hope that you like the transformation pictures!
